Our first stop was Wat Bangkradee, also known as Wat Mon, a temple built over a hundred years ago on the bank of a canal. One would find inside the compound monk cells of traditional Thai architecture with some two hundred posts lining up underneath. We worshipped a standing Buddha’s image which was carved from a single piece of wood there before moving on to our next destination. The nearby Bangkradee Mon Community is very efficient at preserving their culture and traditions.

Having immersed ourselves in enough cultural study for the afternoon, we decided to take a Bangkoontien Canal Boat Ride. A round trip costs 50 Baht for adults and 20 Baht for children, Boat service operates from 11:00 A.M. to 06:30 P.M. This is your chance to view Bangkok‘s last intact stretch of mangrove forest and the unique way of life led by sea gypsies. It takes about half an hour to get to the mouth of the canal where it meets the harbor. Locals said they have spotted dolphins here in winter so always be on the lookout for them. Make sure you get to visit Bangkok‘s 28th perimeter pole marking where Bangkok ends and Samutprakarn begins.

The boat ride concluded at a scenic point where we could all watch the sun set in a most graceful motion in Bangkok. Back on shore we ended the trip with a fresh, sumptuous seafood dinner at Bangkokseaview Restaurant-the only restaurant in the neighborhood that actually juts out into the sea.

Take in the last light of the day, cherish the serenity offered by the calm sea and bring back lots of photographs to share the moment with people you care about.
