Wiang Sa Nan
The minor district Mueang Sa was created in 1908, consisting of the seven tambon Mueang Sa, Ai Na Lai, Ban San, Ban Khueng, Pong Sanuk, Nam Khao and Lai Na split off from Mueang Nan district. 1909 it was upgraded to a full district. In 1917 it was renamed to Phun Yuen, as the district office was located in that tambon. In 1939 it was named back to its historical name, only leaving out the word Mueang which was reserved for the capital districts of provinces.The district was renamed to Wiang Sa on January 23 1986
Located in the central part of Nan province, Wiang Sa is not to be confused with the district of the same name in the southern province of Surat Thani. Home to some breathtaking caves, the stalactite and stalagmite formations are worth a closer look. The surrounding countryside, mountains and nature are ideal for a quiet contemplative trip, but be sure to explore further afieldto visit temples and take in the scenic riverside spots for picnics and allow yourself a quick dip to cool off and play in waterfalls

The Nan Provincial Boat Race takes place annually around the end of October, while the colourful Golden Orange and Red Cross Fair is in mid December. Temperatures are warmer from February onwards.
