Ban Pa Miang Lampang Province
In the forested hill region of northern Thailand, traditional tea cultivation methods have been maintained for generations. North of Chiang Mai Province, villages called “Ban Pa Miang” (tea forest villages) are scattered throughout the mountains within dense hill forests (Keen 1978). Villagerscultivate tea in the forests and produce chewing tea or pickled tea called “miang.” These tea gardens are
called “swan miang” (miang tea gardens) (Photo). Tea gardens are increasingly recognized as a suitable land use for the buffer zone between agricultural and protected forest lands because the loss of forest cover is small compared to other agricultural land uses. (Preechamanya 1996).
