Muang Kluang Ecotourism Community

Muang Kluang village sets a fine example for a community based tourism model. This Muslim village offers an insight into a unique way of life on the Andaman coast, well away from the beaten path. The villagers recently began opening their homes and lives to guests as a way to preserve their cultural heritage. Visitors will experience an authentic Thailand at first hand during the visit.

Muang Kluang translates as “hole in a mango tree.” One hundred years ago settlers from Phuket came to the region looking for a suitable site to live, and chose a giant mango tree as the center of their new village.

In more recent history, visitors to Laem Son National Park would drive through several of the Muang Kluang villages to reach the Park. Visitors did not have an opportunity to learn about the local communities or interact with them in any way. Concerned that an influx of park visitors may threaten or affect their local way of life, locals decided to offer homestay accommodation as a way to reach out to park visitors and generate mutual understanding.

In 2002 the “Muang Kluang Ecotourism Club and Muslim Homestay” was founded and is a flagship member of the Ranong Eco-tourism Network. The homestay has now expanded to include a number of cultural and eco activities for you to join. Villagers involved in tourism activities donate five to 10 percent of their income to a children’s scholarship fund.

Members of the “Muang Kluang Ecotourism Club and Muslim Homestay” Club take pride in sharing their local way of life with guests, including the natural world on which it depends. The nearby organic fruit orchards and mangrove conservation center allow visitors to access a wealth of traditional knowledge. Small-scale fishing and agriculture are the main occupations, along with local specialties such as shrimp paste, dried shrimp, and grouper.
