Wealthy with greenery, wildlife, and marine creatures, its most scenic beaches are located along its western flank. Moving from north to south, the beaches are generally more secluded, less crowded and pricey…

This island’s status on the world’s tourism barometer has risen a few degrees in recent years because of its stunning natural beauty, and the fact that its once-rickety infrastructure has been solidified. More than 70 percent of the mountainous island is still covered in untouched rainforest, and there are many secluded beaches, complete with that vital tropical isle trinity of white sand, palm trees, and warm blue water, where you can really get away from it all and leave your troubles on the mainland.

Koh Chang, or Elephant Island, is part of the Mu Koh Chang National Park. This national park is comprised of an archipelago of 52 islands, of which Koh Chang is the largest. Some 429 square kilometres in size, Koh Chang is, after Phuket, the second biggest island in the Kingdom. Wealthy with greenery, wildlife, and marine creatures, its most scenic beaches are located along its western flank. Moving from north to south, the beaches are generally more secluded, less crowded and pricey, with the aforementioned Diamond Sand towards the northern tip, and Hat Khlong Phrao and Hat Kai Bae, in the middle. Further south is a lively backpacker’s enclave at Lonely Beach, or Hat Tha Nam, where you can stay in a tree house. Other than swimming and sunbathing, the island offers inland adventures such as rainforest trekking. Or you can ride a lumbering elephant into the primeval jungle, populated with wild boars, Javan mongoose, barking deer, and more than 60 different species of birds.

Many of the bungalow operations around Hat Sai Khao and Hat Kai Bae have kayaks, boogie boards and mountain bikes for rent. Booking a day trip, or an overnighter, to nearby islands is another attractive option.

THE GATEWAY TO KOH CHANG

THE GATEWAY TO KOH CHANG

There is only one way to visit Koh Chang, by boat. Most tourists tend to go on board at Laem Ngob Pier and then hire a boat to Koh Chang. It also has a ferryboat which you can float your car to your destination, Ao Sapparod Pier. The major pier or gateways to Koh Chang are situated at the front of the island. They are Ferry pier and general port in each village such as Ao Salakphet, Ban Bang Bao, Ban Klong Son. etc.

Ao Sapparod Pier, the Ferry Boat Pier, is the new travelling center of Koh Chang. Every-day a lot of cars float from Ao Thanmayom Pier (Trad) to Ao Sapparod Pier. It will take time only 20 minutes. A ferry boat here is very safe and suits for boat sick people.

Koh Chang Ferry departs from Ao Thanmayom at

7.30 a.m., 10.00 a.m., 02.00p.m., 04.30 p.m. and return from Ao Sapparod at 08.30 a.m., 11.00 a.m., 01.00 p.m., 3.30 p.m. and 5.30 p.m. The fare is 30 Baht per person, and 150 Baht per car.

There is inexpensive food shops and minibus station at Ao Sapparod. The fare begins at 30 Baht.

Dan Kao Pier is the liveliest pier as most ferryboat from Laem Ngob go ashore here. The geography of the beach in this area is rock, so fishing is more suitable than swimming. After weary day, do not miss eating delicious food.

The return ticket from Laem Ngob (yellow flag) costs 60 Baht per person. The first departure is at 8 a.m. and the final one is at 5 p.m. For a ferryboat that come from Ferry Center Point costs 120 per one. It departs every two hours from 6.30 a.m.-5 p.m.

Dan Mai Pier is not far from Dan Kao Pier and opposite Koh Chang Police Station. It became the dock of fruit as most local people in Ban Dan Mai grow a various kinds of fruit. However, nowadays the picture of loading and unloading fruit at this port is hardly seen because many gardeners sell it themselves by their own pick-up.

Than Mayom Pier is the oldest pier on Koh Chang and the location of Koh Chang National Park Office. You can rest at the office’ s guesthouse or put up a tent on the beach. Over here, the sunrise is splendid, the beach is quiet and swimming is safe. Taking a day off here is profitable. Both accommodation and food are inexpensive, and the nature is scenic.

GO TO KOH CHANG BY PRIVATE CAR

Trat is accessible by three main routes from Bangkok.
Travelling time is about 4 hours. For convenience and better road surface use the elevated BANGKOK-CHONBURI TOLLWAY until its final exit or the BANGKOK-CHONBURI MOTORWAY and exit for BAN BUNG-KLAENG-CHANTHABURI.

ROUTE 1

BANGNA-CHONBURI-BAN BUNG-KLAENG-CHANTHABURI-TRAT

DISTANCE : 315 KILOMETERS

This is the more preferred route with the following details:

(a) Take highway No.3 ( BANGNA-TRAT ROAD) until you reach
the Chonburi by-pass. You can either take the normal road or the new elevated BANGKOK-CHONBURI TOLLWAY which is right above it.
Toll fee is 55 Baht.

(b) Exit from the main road, head to the left and follow the Chonburi by-pass that reads Pattaya-Rayong.

(c) Head for Rayong until you see the BAN BUNG-KLAENG-CHANTHABURI and the BANG SAEN-PATTAYA signboards.

(d) Take the BAN BUNG-KLAENG-CHANTHABURI route on your left.
You are now on highway no.344

(e) Turn right at the BAN BUNG-KLAENG intersection and head for KLAENG only until you reach the CHANTHABURI-RAYONG junction.Take the left route to CHANTHABURI but do not enter the town which is on your right. This is again highway No.3. Instead go forward until you
reach the SA KAEW-TRAT junction.

(f) Take the right turn and go all the way to the town of Trat.

(g) Alternatively, you can head directly to the three piers without passing through Trat town.Look for the signboard Laem Ngop at the LAEM NGOB-TRAT junction.Notice there is a PTT petrol station to your left before the junction.Turn right to LAEM NGOB.This is Highway no. 3156 (LAEM NGOB-SAEN TUNG ROAD).You will reach AO THAMMACHAT followed by CENTRE POINT and KROMALUANG CHUMPORN Piers.

ROUTE 2

The Motorway is another alternative. Starting from Rama IX Road and onto Srinakarin Road, exit after paying the second toll that leads to Ban Bung, Klaeng, Chanthaburi and finally Trat. The total toll fee is
60 Baht.

ROUTE 3

BANGNA-CHONBURI-RAYONG-CHANTHABURI-TRAT

DISTANCE : 385 KILOMETERS

This is the other route using the same highway no.3 but takes longer as you need to pass through the province of Chonburi.

BY AIR-CONDITIONED BUS

1) The Ekamai Bus Terminal is the main terminal for the eastern provinces. It is located at the Ekamai section of Sukhumvit Road which is also easily accessible by the BTS Skytrain. Air-conditioned and ordinary buses depart almost every hour as shown in the timetable here. The trip is about 5 hours.

2) The Northern Bus Terminal (New Morchid) is the other route. It is located at New Morchid of Kampaeng Petch Road.Air-conditioned buses depart as shown in the timetable. The trip is also about 5 hours.

BY VAN

There are many vans plying between Bangkok and Laem Ngob. They are found on Khao San Road near the Vieng Tai Hotel, departing at 8:00 a.m. daily and leaving Laem Ngob at 11:00 a.m. daily. The one-way fare is 500 Baht / person depending on the season.

MOVING AROUND TRAT

The main transportation in Trat is by Songthaew which literally means two rows. Songthaews are pick-up trucks modified for public transportation.Essentially they have two rows of seats at the back of the truck where passengers sit face to face. They can accommodate up to 8 or 10 people depending, of course, on the size of the passengers.

The following serves as a guideline on the route and approximate costs

FROM TRAT TO PIERS

THERE ARE 3 PIERS SERVICING KOH CHANG. All of them are located in the Amphur (district) of Laem Ngob.To go to these piers take one of the Songthaews in Trat. They can be easily found around the municipal market from as early as 6.00 am. The fare is about 20 Baht per person. Vehicle-carrying ferries and taxi or chartered boats are ready to take you to Koh Chang.

THA LAEM NGOB(LAEM NGOB PIER) – ALSO CALLED KROMALUANG CHUMPORN PIER

This is the main pier at Laem Ngob. Ferries from this pier land at Tha Dan Kao (meaning Old Post Pier). The ferries depart every hour during the high season (November to April)and long weekends starting from 7.30 am till 5.00 pm. The frequency is less during other times of the year depending on the crowd, and the weather. However, you can expect a ferry to depart at least every 2 hours. Travelling time is about 30 to 45 minutes and the cost is 60 Baht for each return ticket and 150 Baht per vehicle inclusive of the driver.Other passengers in the same vehicle are charged 60 Baht per person. It is worth noting that all ferry fares should be the same no matter which pier you go to, a legacy of open competition! On arrival at Koh Chang you will find some Songthaews ready to take you to anywhere in Koh Chang. The fare ranges from 40,60 to 80 Baht per person depending on the distance. This applies to other piers as well.

As the main pier, Laem Ngob has a good supply of boats to different parts of Koh Chang and other islands especially Koh Wai, Koh Mak, and Koh Kham. Taxi boats leave for Tha Dan Kao every hour during the high season from November to April and 5 times a day during the low season. There are taxi boats leaving for Tha Dan Mai (New Post pier) and Tha Than Mayom as well but with less frequency.
How to visit Koh Kood

Presently, trevelling to Koh Kood by a package tour is more popular than by your ownselves. Each resort has arranged a various kinds of travel programs, consequently you has many choices to fulfill your need. Koh Kood island is rather flat compared to Koh Chang with the highest mountain on the island, Khao Phaenth, measuring 315 metres. For tourists who already buy a package tour can take a minibus at the appointed point, e.g. at the front of Churdchai Tour Bus Station or the front of Trat Hospital to

Kanlapangha Pier: The pier of Koh Kood resort in Klong Yai District (the route to Ban Had Lek, the border between Thailand and Cambodia which is far from the downtown about 80 kms.

Koh Kood Cabana Pier: It is site is far from Trat City Hall around 5 kilometers near and near Chao Pho Dan Kao Shrine.

Koh Kood Island

Ao Cho Pier: It belongs to Peterpan and Captain Hook Resort. The route that leads to Lam Sok is far from Trat downtown 20 kilometers.

Klong Hin Hut or Lung Reang Pier: It Is located near the port of Koh Kood Cabana and Chao Pho Dan Kao Shrine and for from Trat downtown 5 kilometers,

PREPARE YOURSELF BEFORE VISITING KOH KOOD

To make your trip much more safe and fun, you should carefully prepare yourself like this.

Accommodation: Many resorts on Koh Kood are welcome you all the time and they also arrange similar package tours for your convenience. However, there are some differences in each package. They are the kind of a brat and the diving site. Therefore, you can select the program as you prefer and ask for information from every resort.

One that is allergic :to seafood or Muslim should check out the menu and inform this resort before you go.

Vehicle: It is no need to worry about your own car as every resort has the, security service all the time,

For one who travels by bus has to take an air conditioned public bus at Eastern Elias Terminal, locally called Eakamai at 10.30 p.m. or 11.00 p.m. It will reach Muang District, Trat Province, within 5-6 hours (at 4 a.m. and 4.30 a.m. respectively) Then continue with minibus to the pier.

Personal Stuffs : You should prepare comfortable clothes, slippers, sun glasses, hat/cap, inhalant, balm, antidiarrheal, etc. Private snorkel is preferable as same as snack since, there is no minimart on Koh, Kood.

Budget : it you lay a half of deposit, you should pay the rest before going on board. Additionally, holding cash is better than a credit card as no bank pins the business here.

Koh Kood The best time for a visit to Koh Kood is between beginning of November and the end of February. At this time it is relatively cool, dry and mostly sunny. But until the end of May, when it is hotter than the cool season, a visit is still convenient. Even during monsoon season, Koh Kood is worth visiting for it doesnt rain every day and all day long. Activities on Koh Kood – Besides lazing on the beach, snorkeling at the beautiful coral reefs or just watching stars at night; visitors can also visit nearby islands for snorkeling and other activities.
