Khao Lak Thailand is a resort town in Phang Nga province on the western Andaman Sea coastline of southern Thailand, about 100 km north of Phuket Town. When the disastrous tsunami of 2004 struck South Asia, Khao Lak was the hardest-hit area in Thailand with over 4000 fatalities. It has since made an impressive recovery despite many hardships along the way, and is once again a popular tourist destination. Khao Lak mainly caters to families and those looking for party people prefer Phuket.

Khao lak is named after the national park (Khao Lak-Lam Ru). The park was declared a national park in August 1991. It occupies a vast area of 150 sq.km and covers Amphoe Thai Muang, Amphoe Kapong, Amphoe Takua Pa and Amphoe Muang. Khao Lak is becoming increasingly popular, mainly with European visitors. It’s easy to reach, quite and, as yet, not overdeveloped. It is something like Phuket’s past 20 years. You can walk northward along the sand for many kilometres, almost as far as Bang Sak beach.

Most larger hotels will run a shuttle bus service into Bang La On, often described as Khao Lak ‘centre’ although these may be at limited times and may be chargeable. There are plenty of taxis as an alternative. Bang La On is about 20 minutes by shuttle or taxi from, for example, The Sarojin.

Bang La On has the most shops, bars restaurants and banks. There are also many ATM machines. Bang Niang is smaller, but still has a good selection. You will find the majority of visitors to Bang Niang are couples whereas at Bang La On it’s mainly families. Khuk Khak is still quite small with a handful of restaurants and a few shops. In the High Season all of the restaurants will be open including a wide range of both independent and hotel based beachfront restaurants.

In Bang Niang there is a large range of accommodation from the 4.5 star Ramada to bungalow resorts like The Sanuk Bungalows. In Bang La On the accommodation is primarily 3 to 4 star, for example, the Baan Khao Lak on Nang Thong Beach and The Paradise on Sunset Beach, the next beach going south. Just south of Khao Lak Lam Ru National Park there is Khao Lak beach which has the popular Merlin Resort and the relatively new boutique Lukanawadee resort.

Get in Khao Lak Thailand
Khao Lak By plane
The easiest way to get to Khao Lak is to fly into either Phuket (the closest alternative) or Krabi and go to Khao Lak from there. Both airports serve international as well as domestic destinations.
A taxi from Phuket airport to Khao Lak costs between 1100 and 1600 baht. If you think this is too much and prefer to take a bus, you will have to get to the main road, Highway 4, about 5 kilometers from the airport. Hop on a bus headed towards Takua Pa, Ranong or Surat Thani, they all stop in Khao Lak. It’s about 80 kilometers from Phuket airport to Khao Lak.
Khao Lak By train
The nearest train station is at Surat Thani on the east coast, making this an inconvenient option.
Khao Lak By bus
From Bangkok, buses go to Khao Lak from the southern bus terminal (Sai Tai). The trip, which costs less than 500 baht, takes about ten hours and runs overnight. Don’t buy bus tickets from Bangkok travel agents – they will most likely make you go via Surat Thani where you have to change bus.
From the bus station in Phuket, take a bus towards Takua Pa, Ranong or Surat Thani. It will set you back about 50 .
From Krabi there’s a daily minibus to Khao Lak. All travel agents in Krabi sell tickets.

Get around Khao Lak Thailand
* Chong Fah Waterfall – about 10 minutes east of Bang Niang – great for hot days, very scenic and accessible to all.

* Khao lak Thailand ,Police Boat 813 – one of two police boats overseeing the vacation of Khun Phum Jensen, son of former Royal Princess Ubol Ratana (his father was an American, hence the last name) at the time of the 2004 tsunami. Khun Phum was jet-skiing when the wave struck, and he and the entire crew of one of the police boats (which was sunk) died. This is the other boat, which was swept inland and has been left exactly where the tsunami deposited it as a memorial and historical landmark.

* Khao lak Thailand, Takuapa & Old Town. At Takuapa Old Town you will find Sino-Portuguese architecture and have the chance to wander around the quaint shops (best in the early morning), about 45 minutes drive from Khao Lak. Takuapa Market and River Plaza are in the new town, slightly closer to Khao Lak (near the bus station). This is a typical local market and the Plaza has some good shops and a few riverside restaurants.

* Lampi Waterfall near khao lak Thailand. About 30 minutes south of Khao Lak just off highway 4. A very nice waterfall, best viewed in the early morning as the sun rises from behind the mountains and the rays shine through the mist. The falls are only a short walk from the car park, making access easy for all.

* Khao Sok National Park. A visit to Khao Sok National Park will allow activities including jungle trekking on foot or elephant, visiting waterfalls & river rafting/canoeing. Around one hour drive north east from Khao Lak. A good day out, although accommodation is available for extended visits.

* Khao Lak Lam Ru National Park. Nice walks and a restaurant (not open in the evening). Between Nang Thong and Khao Lak beaches. Walkeable from the resorts in Bang La On.

* Cheow Lan Lake and Rachaphrapha Dam. Just two hours north of Khao Lak off highway 401. Superb views over the lake to the limestone ridges. Boat trips are available to rafts (for overnight accommodation you will need to pre book at Khao Sok National Park HQ or book the trip via a tour agency).

* Saori Foundation Centre, Bang Muang near Khao lak(Drive north from Khao Lak and Bang Niang to Ban Muang; go through the built up area and a few hundred metres further on you will see on the left an official-looking entrance… turn left into it and find the Saori workshop along on the left.), [1]. A women’s workshop which develops its own textile designs after a Japanese monk showed tsunami survivors how to weave and earn a living. You are welcome at the workshop on any working day – Monday to Saturday – to see how the designs and products are made and to examine them to see if you would like to purchase anything. Really nice products with designs individual to each worker.Enjoy Khao Lak Thailand.

Hat Kamala is a lovely stretch of sand and sea about 4km south of Surin and 25km from Phuket. The northern end (the nicest area) is shaded by casuarina trees and features a small thatched-roof snack bar. Please note: Most of the locals here are Muslim and would find topless bathing extremely offensive.

Phuket Fantasea (0 7638 5000; open 5.30pm-11.30pm Wed-Mon), a US$60 million cultural theme park’, is located just north of Hat Kamala. Despite the billing, there aren’t any rides but there is a truly magical show that manages to capture the colour and pageantry of traditional Thai dance and costumes and combine them with state-of-the-art light and sound techniques that rival anything found in Las Vegas (think 30 elephants). All of this takes place on a stage dominated by a full-scale replica of a Khmer temple reminiscent of Angkor Wat. Kids especially would be captivated by the spectacle. There is also quite a good and varied collection of souvenir shops in the park offering Thai-made handicrafts. The Thai buffet dinner is surprisingly good. Tickets can be booked through most hotels and tour agencies.

Places to Stay Kamala is seeing a fair bit of development as small places expand and go upscale, but budget options can be found

few minutes’ walk from the beach. There are eight beautiful, comfortable, clean and well-furnished rooms at this small and intimate hotel. All come with hot water, TV, fridge and good decor.

Benjamin Resort (fax 0 7638 5739; rooms with air-con in low season 350-500B, in high season 700-800B) is very good value. All rooms have TV, minibar and a terrace with table and chairs. The more expensive rooms have sea views, some of which are glorious. The hotel, built in 2001, is on the beach.

Pa Pa Crab Guesthouse (fax 0 7638 5315; rooms with fan/air-con in low season 450/7008, in high season 600/8508) has 10 well-decorated, comfortable rooms and a lovely colour scheme, but will close in low season if business is slow.

Thai Kamala Village (0 7627 9795, fax 0 7627 9797; rooms in low/high season 1200/18008) is another almost-new hotel directly on the beach. All of the 17 air-con rooms face the bay, offering excellent views from their balconies. They are simply but tastefully decorated, and aligned perfectly to catch the sea breeze. There’s a restaurant as well, which is open in the high season only.

Phuket Kamala Resort (0 7621 2775, fax 0 7621 1841; bungalows with air-con in low/high season 1250/16508) is a moderately upmarket resort across the street from the beach. It features tennis courts, a pool and a fitness centre. The 40 bungalows have private balconies, minibar and TV.

Kamala Beach Estate ( 0 7627 9756, fax 076324115; apartments in low season US$95-190, in high season US$120-235, villas low/high season US$255/350) is at the southern end of the bay, overlooking the beach. It boasts fully equipped, high-security modern apartments, suites and villas — some with a kitchen and fantastic sea views. The manicured grounds feature an outdoor Jacuzzi, a lovely pool and an on-site restaurant. Each unit is individually owned and thus uniquely different; 20% are solely owner-occupied. The villas are especially beautifully laid out, with huge flagstone terraces and loads of comfortable and bright space.

Places to Eat The best value for eating is the friendly no-name thatched-roof restaurant

at the northern end of the beach. There are others like it a little to the south. Kamala Seafood (closed in low season), near the centre of the beach, is a decent family-run Thai seafood restaurant catering to farang

The Balcony Bar & Restaurant ( 0 7627 9756 ext 132; dishes 80-2508), at Kamala Beach Estate on the southern end of the bay, is the most upmarket place to eat; it offers good views of the bay, reliable Thai and Western food and a decent wine list.

This Beach is the most developed, most vibrant, most visited beach of Phuket that never fails to impress visitors. Located approximately 15 kilometers from the city, the beach has a wide range of accommodations and shopping arcades, and provides magnificent leisure activities and energetic night-time entertainment. It is a picture perfect postcard view of a 3-kilometer long white sandy beach that is perfect for swimming, lazing, and enjoying challenging water sports such as jet skiing, windsurfing snorkeling, sailing, and parasailing.

Patong is the party capital of Asia, with a world famous nightlife and a great beach. Mostly made up of hotels, world class restaurants, nightclubs and various tourist attractions, this is a hedonists heaven of nightlife, with numerous entertainment complexes and countless bars clustered together in and around Bangla Road and the beach road. The town has a very obvious female, transgender and male sex industry to cater to every taste, however to only view it as this is a mistake, it offers so much more, for families and couples too.

Massage parlors of the erotic as well the therapeutic (Nuad Thai) genre provide less alcohol/drug infested venues for punters and wellness seekers. One can even find masseuses practicing this medical art atop bamboo mats on the beach sands (100 baht and up).

Prices are higher than in Phuket Town, but there’s more budget accommodation here than at the more southerly beaches.

This may not be a good destination for the average backpacker, except in the rainy season when prices are far lower. However this is not Patong’s stated market, it is fairly and squarely aimed at holidaymakers and does it rather well.

Rooming houses (‘Mansions’) a few blocks inland provide nice, clean a/c rooms and suites as cheaply as 300 baht/day (less without a/c), or 3,000-10,000 baht/month. However Patong has every type of accommodation imaginable, from home stays to 5 star palaces.

How to go?

By plane

Phuket International Airport is 35 km to the north of Patong. “Limousine” taxis from the airport to Patong are a steep 500 baht (45 minutes); meter-taxis 300+ baht (if coming from the airport, from outside the car park gates); shared minibuses limit the damage to 150 baht (but 180 baht in the Patong to airport direction, presuming you book through an agency). Cheapest way of all (however also the most time consuming) is to take the airport shuttle bus to Phuket Town, and switch there to a local bus to Patong.

By bus

Regular buses connect to Phuket Town (20 baht, 45 minutes) every 30 minutes or so between 07:00 and 18:00. The route starts from the southern end of the beach, after which the bus crawls through town (via Bangla Road), stopping to pick up passengers, before finally heading off across the hills.

By Limousine

Limousine usually referrs to a larger sedan, such as Toyota Camry, with leather seats, etc. They cost around 600-700 baht to go to Kata Beach. Considering the drive is about an hour long, this is one of the best options to get to Kata Beach.

The following places offer enjoyable activities:

Phuket Water Ski Cableways: Tel: 0 7620 2525-7

Simon Cabaret: Tel: 0 7634 2011-5

Tarzans Jungle Bungy Jump: Tel: 0 7632 1351

Tazans Catapult Bungy: Tel: 0 1464 1581

Patong Go-kart Speedway: Tel: 0 7632 1949

Phuket Joyland: Tel: 0 7620 3005

Horror House: Tel: 0 7629 3123

In addition, Patong offers gastronomical delights for seafood lovers. There are plenty of good restaurants located along the beach.
