Sporty Phuket : Ride on waves

When people think of surfing in Asia, they think of Bali. But the arrival of the monsoon winds in Phuket means the east coast of the island now also boasts big waves. Decha Sithidej, 34, a surfing instructor of Andaman Sea Surf (from B2,800/3 hours, www. andamanseasurf.com) on Patong Beach, explains that from April to mid-December Phuket becomes a tem¬porary surfers’ paradise, with waves reaching as high as eight feet on some beaches. “Patong Beach is the most popular because it’s easy to access,” says Decha “but advanced surfers find Kalim Beach, next to Patong, and Nai Yang Beach, near the airport, more fun and challenging.” And if you’re a skeptical novice, Decha claims that anyone who can swim can surf, and his students range from six-year-olds to forty-somethings.

Sporty Phuket

The growing popularity of surfing in Phuket is clear, not only in the growing number of surfing schools and shops, but also in the appearance of a new competition last year. The Quicksilver Phuket Surf Series (www.thailandsurfseries.com) was spread out over three beaches and attracted participants from several countries. This year’s event is penciled in for around August or September, so be prepared.

Sporty Phuket

Sporty Phuket : Sight Seaing

When waves are high, it is not a very comfortable boat ride from Phuket to Phi Phi for a spot of snor-keling. Koh Racha, which is located much closer to the main island, is therefore a popular destination during the rainy season. It takes about 40 minutes by speedboat from Phuket‘s Chalong Pier to reach its powdery white sands, aqua blue waters and teeming corals. One of the most popular dive oper-ators, Raya Oceanic Diver (076-384-326, www.ray¬aoceanicdiver.com), organizes both snorkeling and dive trips. If you always wanted to give scuba div¬ing a try, they have a Discover Scuba Diving (B4,500/1 day) course which gives you a real chance to see if you like hanging out in the under¬water world. We’ll be honest: the state of the coral is a little depressing with much of it decaying or already destroyed as a result of global warming but there are still lots of fish to see and visibility is great. A daytrip to snorkel and swim around the island costs around B1,800 but a special rate of B1,200 for two is available for Nok Air’s Nok Fan Club members (see Essentials).

Sporty Phuket : Tough Athletics

For those who really want to test their athleticism (or are just downright crazy) Phuket is also famous for two grueling events: The Laguna Phuket Inter-national Marathon (www.phuketmarathon) and the Laguna Phuket International Triathlon. This year’s marathon took place in June and attracted thousands of runners from around the globe. See Almost Famous for our interview with Chakrit Boonkong the overall winner of this year’s event and get in training now for next year’s race.

Sporty Phuket

Even more demanding is the triathlon (www. lagunaphukettriathlon.com), scheduled to take place on Nov 28. It’s been running since 1994 and is now so popular that this year’s event is already booked up with thousands of competitors wanting to swim 1.8km, cycle 55km and run 12km. So if you’re applying now, you have a choice between getting on the waiting list or joining the 6km Fun Run instead.

Kiteboarding Asia Ltd.(KBA) is the leading supplier of Education and Equipment in Thailand.Kiteboarding is a young, fast growing water-sport that everyone can learn and enjoy.

Rock climbing - the cliffs of Rai Leh in Krabi are arguably among the best in the world. Rai Leh is perhaps the best winter sport rock climbing area in the world, with over a thousand bolted routes up limestone faces with breathtaking views over the ocean. If you are an avid rock climber, chances are you already know about this

KBA is available at 7 locations in Thailand :Hua Hin, Pattaya, Phuket, Koh Samui, Chumphon, Pranburi and koh Phangan which an excellent place to learn this great sport.
Rock climbing – the cliffs of Rai Leh in Krabi are arguably among the best in the world. Rai Leh is perhaps the best winter sport rock climbing area in the world, with over a thousand bolted routes up limestone faces with breathtaking views over the ocean. If you are an avid rock climber, chances are you already know about this

place and the spectacular cliffs are the reason you are here.

Climbing is graded on the French scale, most is steep and challenging with only limited possibilities for beginners. Due to the corrosive nature of the seaside location, the steel bolts may be of questionable integrity, bolt failure is not uncommon here, and threads (rope tied through holes in the rock) may be of questionable integrity as well. Overall the rock quality is superb; however, like everywhere else, you will find the occasional loose section including the famous Rai Leh stalactites.

Scuba diving – easily accessible Ko Tao (near Samui) draws the crowds, but also possible in Pattaya and Krabi, and the Similan Islands are worth the journey

Diving in Ko Tao is easy, fun, and you can see turtles, stingrays, barracudas, lots of small fish, reef sharks, and there is a very small chance of seeing a whale shark. Nearly any time of the year except November is good diving weather in Ko Tao, In November, the visibility is reduced and the seas are choppy, but diving is good by the standards of many other destinations. When diving is good, the visibility can be 40+ meters. Average visibility is around 15-20 meters.

There are a huge number of dive operators on the island, many offering budget accommodation. Currently the price for PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) open water certification including the new PADI training manual, professional instruction, rental equipment, boat dives, and certification is around 10,000 baht; insurance and basic accommodation may also be included. Shop around as not all shops teach in the same way. Look for experienced dive instructors instead of a low price.

Muay Thai Camp Spotlight – Lanna Muay Thai

This article feature is about Lanna Muay Thai in Chang Mai, Thailand. I hope you find this information helpful and informative.

Lanna Muay Thai

Location

Lanna Muay Thai is located in Chang Mai, which is the second biggest city in Thailand next to Bangkok. The camp is located at the foot of the Doi Suthep Mountain, near the local university. There are also several small shops and resturants located near by and the main part of the city is only 6km away. The camp is located about 10 minutes from the Chang Mai airport. The address itself is:

Lanna Kiat Busaba Muay Thai Camp

161, Soi Chang Kian,

Huay Kaew Road,

Chiang Mai, 50300,

Thailand

Putting the address into Google or Mapquest is difficult, because you have to format it correctly with the commas and everything in the correct place. The camp provides a map on their website which you can use to find the gym from the airport. You can view it at their website.

Best Travel Route

You have two options for the best travel route to get to the camp. Option 1 (which is the best overall) is to fly into the Chang Mai airport. Most likely you will need to connect to a flight from your previous destination at the Bangkok Airport. A flight from Bangkok to Chang Mai will take only about an hour or so.

Option 2 is probably best used if you have a long overlay between flights. That option would be to fly into Bangkok airport and take a bus from there to Chang Mai. The bus ride will take between 10-12 hours, however if you were going to be sitting in an airport all that time anyway, it may be best to try and arrange a bus ride.

Pricing

The price to train at Lanna Muay Thai is pretty consistant with most of the more popular gyms in Thailand, perhaps a bit on the lower side which is always nice. The daily price is 400 baht, the weekly price is 2200 baht and the price for a month of training is 8000 baht. The accomodation prices are decent as well ranging anywhere from 3000 baht for a shared housing room right at camp, to as high as 10,000 baht for an apartment/condo/house for a month. The camp does not accept credit cards.

Accomodations

Speaking of accomodations, here is a little information on that. The camp has 3 rooms (2 person per room) that are onsite at the camp. Each room has it’s own toliet and shower, although there is no hot water. Accommodation at the camp is on a first come first serve basis, if there are no rooms avaiable upon arrival there are several guesthouses, bungalows, and hotels within walking distance of the camp where people may stay. The basic guesthouse rooms outside the camp are usually a single room with toilet/shower and fan. Air conditioning is available but mostly unnessecary and expensive. The camp will help you find a room upon your arrival to suit your needs and budget

Facilities

The facilities in the gym include 2 rings, 12 bags, 1 speed ball, 1 punching ball, 3 sit up benchs, various basic free weights, medicine balls, monkey, chin up, and parallel bars. Utlizing the uniqueness of it’s surroundings the camp uses the near by mountain for some tough hill runs. The training area is partially roofed and open on 3 sides to allow some nice air flow and keep the gym cool.

Trainers

Lanna has 8 Thai Trainers full time, 3 part time, as well as the owner who is a farang instructor. Additionally two of their long term foreign fighters, including one woman, also help out with the new students. Each of the Trainers have their own fighters who they work with but all their fighters will also train with different trainers. Lanna gives everyone the chance to work with several different trainers, to find their favourite, and to give them the experience of different styles. The full time trainers are all at the Camp at least 5 days a week, some of us are here 7 days a week.

The average class sizes can vary from weekend mornings with 5 people to mid-week afternoons with 40 people. The constant is the fighters, there are always people training to fight, even on Sundays. At times Lanna can have a lot of fighters competeing at the same time the camp will be buzzing with intense training. Even during the quiet times you can still find someone in the gym training, hard!

Training Routine

The gym has 2 training sessions a day, in both the morning and afternoon. Here is an overview of the training schedule:

Morning

0600-Warm up/Stretch

0610-10 km. Run

0710-Drills (Knees, Kicks Teeps and Punches on the bag)

0730-Shadow Box (5 to 6 rounds)

0800-Bag Work (4 to 5 rounds)

0825-Pad Work (2 to 5 rounds)

0850-Clinching/Sparring (alternate days up to 5 rounds)

0915-Drills (as before)

0935-Exercises (sit ups push ups chin ups)

0950-Shadow Box (2 to 3 rounds)

1005-Cool Down Stretch

Afternoon

1600-Warm Up/Stretch

1610-3 to 5 km. Run

1635-Skip (4 rounds)

1655-Shadow Box (5 to 6 rounds)

1725-Bag Work (6 to 8 rounds)

1805-Pad Work (5 to 6 rounds)

1835-Clinching/Sparring (alternate days, 5 to 6 rounds)

1905-Drills (as morning)

1925-Shadow Box (3 to 4 rounds)

1940-Cool Down Stretch

I have seen schedules on many gyms which only include about 2-2.5 hours of training. Lanna’s sessions go for almost 4 hours. As a result you will get into excellent fitness shape extremely quick. It is also important and very overlooked that the sessions include a warm up and cool down stretch. This helps avoid injuries and aids in your recovery time.

Fighting

Lanna is usually having about 2 fights a week as a camp. At times it can be as many as four fights in a week. One question I specifically contacted the camp and asked was how they determine if someone is ready to fight. I wanted to know if it was necessary to spend a specific amount of time at the camp, or were there other means of evaluating this. Here is how Lanna determines if someone is ready to fight. The camp will determine if a person has experience or the ability to get into the ring to fight with your first training session. In the case you are a new or first time fighters, the only criteria is a true desire and willingness in your heart to not only have a go in the ring, but put in the effort into the training, and with about one to two months training, a basic level of fitness and basic technique you will be able to have your first fight.

Administration/Office

There are a couple strengths here as far as I can determine. First off, it is a farang owned school, and the owner Andy (who is also a trainer) handles all the correspondence. It is always an advantage to have a Western person in charge to handle any issues that may arise, in my opinion. An example is how quickly Andy returned my email when I contacted him with additional questions I had regarding the camp. His response was in the same day, and it was very detailed. Andy also seems very willing to aid the guests with any services that are necessary for them to enjoy their stay, from arranging tours to finding accomodations. These small touches do not go unnoticed and would give Lanna an edge in determining if it is the right camp to attend.

Lanna has a very informative website. The format of the site is not overly flashy or complicated. It is easy to naviagate and there is more than enough information on the website including the history of Muay Thai, training techniques and a frequently asked questions section. One downside to the website is that it does not have any photos of the gym. Also, the addition of a forum to the website would be nice as it would allow prior and prospective students of the camp to communicate with each other.

Extracurricular

There are plenty of things to do around the area when you are not training. The camp is located at the foot of a mountain, so hiking and rock climbing are among the first activites that comes to mind. There is also a famous temple in Chang Mai called the Doi Suthep temple, which has 304 steps to reach the top. Other activies include Elephant treks, blues and jazz bars, golf courses and the night bazzar.

Uniqueness

I asked Andy what makes the camp unique. Why should someone chose Lanna over another camp. He had a great response. Here is what he said:

“Consistency. We are really no different from any other Muay Thai gym in Thailand. We live our life training for the same thing, to fight every week at the local stadiums and country fairs, the big city and overseas when we are good enough. We are different because of our strong foreign support, we have had several long term, 2 years or more, foreign fighters stay with us and many of our students, fighting or not, come back year after year to spend time training and living at the Camp. Muay Thai is about family and we have a large extended family after our 15 years together. When it comes to training, we ensure good basic technique and understanding of what you are doing, and the chance to experience and (maybe) live the life of a Muay Thai fighter.”

I gotta tell you, that sounds great to me. I love the fact that people come back to the camp again and again. That is always a good sign. I also hit up a lot of forums and always hear good things about Lanna, which is promising.

Contact Information

If you are interested in visiting Lanna Muay Thai (and hopefully you will be after this article), here is how you can contact them:

Playing Golf in Thailand: Expert Questions and Answers

Without doubt Thailand is becoming one of the fastest growing golf destinations for visiting tourists throughout the world. Only recently, the association of world golf travel agents voted Thailand the best up & coming destination, enhancing the excellent reputation it already has.
In order to assist you in planning your Thailand golf holiday, I have detailed below the most frequently asked questions.
When is the best time to visit?
Without doubt, the best time of year for golf is from November – February/March. This is the ‘cool’ season, although is also the peak season for visiting tourists. As such, be prepared for busy golf courses and try to plan your holiday well in advance.
What about the rest of the year?
You can play golf throughout the year in Thailand outside the cool season, and the weather is a mixture of very hot days, to very wet days. However, do not let this put you off as there are a number of great advantages. You can get some great deals on hotel prices and the courses are much quieter to play.
April is still a ‘dry’ month, with the rainy season not really starting until May. However, April & May are without doubt the hottest months of the year. June – August is not quite as hot, although you tend to get daily downpours. Again, do not let this put you off as they are normally short lived, and the courses dry out very quickly. September and October, the weather tends to be similar to that of the summer months although things tend to be drier and the weather becomes more predictable as the year wears on.
Where is the best place to play?
This depends very much what you are looking for. Bangkok has a huge number of courses, infrastructure that you would expect from any major capital and the city is very lively, providing a great experience for everyone.
The coastal resort of Hua Hin and the northern cities of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are a bit quieter, and very popular with couples looking for golf, relaxation, and a sampling of true Thai culture.
Pattaya is without doubt the entertainment city in Thailand, and not for the shy and retiring type, although it also boasts a large number of excellent courses.
Phuket, the famous tropical island, offers a combination of great golf and stunning beaches, and there is also now a championship course on Koh Samui, another tropical island.
North of Bangkok, lies the famous Khao Yai National Park, and there are a number of excellent courses now open in this region, which boasts spectacular scenery and views.
Finally, the area of Kanchanaburi, and the famous River Kwai, also has a number of fine courses, historical sights, and can be a great alternative to the other popular tourist destinations.
What are the courses like?
The majority of golf courses in Thailand are nothing short of first class. With many being designed by famous golf professionals such as Jack Nicklaus and Nick Faldo, together with top golf course architects such as Pete Dye and Robert Trent Jones, you will be amazed with the quality.
What about the caddies?
Caddies are compulsory on a Thai golf course and are a fantastic experience. Included in your green fee, they cost around 250 baht (approximately 7 US dollars) a round, which has to be the best value for money in the world. In most cases they will carry your clubs on ‘caddy car’ (trolley), should you wish to walk, although they will also ride with you in a cart if you prefer. Please note it is compulsory at only a few Thailand golf courses to use a cart. Your caddie will be allocated upon arrival, and will look after your clubs until you tee-.off and are of particular assistance for easy golf in Thailand. Always helpful with a smiling face, your caddie is another part of the unique Thailand golf experience. They mark and clean your ball, give guidance on the line of putts, and try to keep you cool when things get a bit hot during your round.
What is there to do outside golf?
You will certainly never be short of things to do outside golf. As a leading tourist destination Thailand has a number of alternative attractions and exciting opportunities to combine golf & travel, and its tourist magnetism remains unrivalled in any other part of the world.
From the many temples and night markets, to the state of the art shopping malls, from stunning beaches, to the stunning waterfalls and scenery, there is something for everyone.
The culture and customs in Thailand also provide a fascinating insight to this wonderful country leaving you completely amazed.
Thailand also hosts some the best Spa facilities in the world, allowing you to relax and enjoy the rejuvenating treatments, and unbelievably friendly service that goes with it all.
I recommend all golfers allocate some time after their rounds for, at least, a one hour foot massage. This treatment is available throughout the country at clean specialized shops located almost on every street corner in the tourist areas. For around 200 baht (approximately 5 US dollars) is an experience not be missed. For the golfer who has walked his 18 holes, this papering of his feet and legs only goes to further the pleasure of the total golfing experience only available in Thailand.
What about transportation and getting around?
Your package booked with most tour operators will provide transportation from the airport to your hotel, and return transfers to the golf course each day. You can reserve this private transportation in the evenings although there is no shortage of local transportation.
Taxi’s are very cheap, and in abundance. Also, you have the famous ‘Tuk Tuk’s', a smaller open air version of a taxi that will transport you around town at very little cost.
In summary, if you are thinking about a golf vacation to Thailand, then one company, Golfasian, http://www.golfasian.com, will be more than happy to answer any additional questions you may have. We pride ourselves on our high level of service, and repeat customers we get each year by providing as much customized assistance as needed to our golfing customers.
Mark Siegel is the owner of Golfasian, http://www.golfasian.com and publisher of the Thailand Golf Blog at http://www.thailandgolfzone.com. He has played golf for over 30 years. He has lived and worked across Asia during the last 20 years and during this time has traveled extensively both as a tourist and also as a resident throughout all Thailand. Out of the 200 or so golf courses in all Thailand, Mark has first hand playing experience at the 100 best courses from the North to the South of the country.
He currently resides in Bangkok together with his wife and 1 year old son. Mark is fluent in Thai and has self-taught himself to both read and write in the Thai language. He is a respected and admired foreign business person among the local Thai people, in spite of the fact that he is a 46 year old American.
