The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has discounted year-round weekend and public holiday roundtrip fares to various destinations. The downsides are that you can only book the trips at Hua Lamphong station (from9am-4pm, see Essentials) and they only run when there are more than 10 people.

Samut Songkram samut Sakorn
Every Sat there’s a day trip from Bangkok to Ampawa taking you to the popular floating market and nearby tourist attractions, while every Sun there is a trip to Samut Songkram/ Samut Sakorn featuring visits to temples and other attractions in the two provinces. Both cost B999 including meals and transport. If you have more time, then B2,499 gets you an overnight and all meals.
Kanchanaburi
The SRT offers a host of trips to the home of the famous River Kwai Bridge, each one offering a different range of activities and attractions. They do all stop at Phra Pathom Chedi though, so you can’t avoid that.
The Suan Saiyoke Adventure Park.
The train leaves Hua Lamphong at 6:30am and arrives in Kanchanaburi at 9:35am. After a break for photos of the bridge, you head on to Sai Yoke Resort for two hours of activities like kayaking and climbing in the treetops at the AdventurePark before heading back to Bangkok. B270 for a normal train, B390 for air-con, exclusive of meals. If you have more time, get an overnight option priced at B1,200-1,320, including accommodation and meals. Saiyoke Noi Waterfall. After some brief photo stops, this trip ends at the beautiful Sai Yoke Noi waterfall where you’ll have three hours to splash around. The train leaves Hua Lamphong at 6:30am and you should get back to Bangkok around 7:25pm. Every Sat, Sun and public holidays. B240 for air-contrain, B120 for non-air-con, excluding meals.
Kanchanaburi Raft Cruise
A four-hour train journey will transport you from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi where you then clamber aboard a big raft for a spot of lunch and sightseeing along the River Kwai. There will also be a chance to visit the cemetery for the soldiers who died during World War II, while building the famous Death Railway. Available first Sat and Sun of month at B740 for air-con train and B620 for non air-con, including meals. You can also get a package priced B1,110 1,200 for an overnight stay on the raft and four meals.

This trip takes you to two wonderful watery destinations: one natural, one manmade. The natural part is a visit to the Erawan Waterfall, one of the largest and most spectacular in Thailand. Then you’ll go on to Srinakarin Dam where a guide will explain the history of this engineering marvel and take you on a picturesque tour of the dam.
